IMI at KIT

The Institute for Information Management in Engineering (IMI) focuses on the methodological and information technological support of operational and information-processing activities in engineering processes with consideration on all aspects of management and organization of these activities. In our research we are putting emphasis on processes, organizations and technologies integrated in the following areas:

  • Process Management (PM)
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Smart Immersive Environments (SIE)
  • Digital Twin (DT)

These thematic clusters integrate our research areas and ensure that the IMIs research and technological development focuses on operative applications in an industrial context.

The results of the thematic cluster "Methods" are methods and process models adapted to different types of engineering tasks as well as guidelines for their implementation in the company. They form the basis for the implementation of application-specific system solutions. In order to be efficient, flexible and demand-based in use these system solutions are designed as modules based on a generic engineering platform. This takes company-specific , organizational and technological frameworks into account.

The Center for Artificial Intelligence Talents (CAIT) promotes and supports the IMI by providing modern Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality / Mixed Reality technologies and allowing a direct implementation of the research results. The close cooperation with the Forschungszentrums Informatik (FZI  – Department Prozess- und Datenmanagement im Engineering (PDE)  of the research area Intelligent Systems and Production Engineering  – ensures the immediate practical relevance of the IMIs research topics and the efficient knowledge and technology transfer to industry.
