Dear interested students of the Virtual Reality and Virtual Engineering Practical Course,

the practical course will take place in winter semester 2023/2024.

To register, please fill out the questionnaires in ILIAS by October 18, 2023 to let us know which project you prefer to work on. If you do not want to or cannot take part in the practical course, please let us know by mail.

The Virtual Engineering practical course is only offered to Master's students and the Virtual Reality practical course is only offered to Bachelor's students. Please consult your module handbooks. Students in both courses will work together on the projects.

Location: Seminar room on the 5th floor at IMI.

The first event will be held on October 24 at 2pm in presence. Further information will be published in the ILIAS course.

Goals of the Virtual Reality Practical Course

Overall objective: After the practical course, students will be able to operate and use the existing hardware and software for Virtual Reality (VR) applications in order to:

  • design the solution of a complex task in a team
  • solve the subtasks within a specific work package in smaller groups, taking the interfaces into account
  • to develop a complete end product

Intended competencies: Methodical approach with practical engineering tasks, ability to work in a team, work in interdisciplinary groups, time management.

Course: The Virtual Reality practical course consists of the following partially overlapping phases:

  • Basics: Introduction to VR (hardware, software, applications)
  • Tools: Introduction to the development environment
  • Applications: different according to current research topic (see videos below)

The module examination is a different kind of success control and consists of:

  • Presentation of the project work (40%)
  • Individual project portfolio for the work in the 3rd phase (30%)
  • Independent work on a topic in the field of Virtual Reality (20%)
  • Social skills (10%)

Students can also use the labs for independent work (research, follow-up, development) outside of the courses by prior arrangement.

Previous successes and results from the Virtual Reality Practical Course can be viewed on our YouTube Channel:

  • In the summer semester 2018, the VR Space project was continued. Furthermore, a VR image of the game factorio was developed as well as an application for Holobench.
  • In WS2017/18, students worked on the VR Space, Driving Simulator - Vibration Feedback, Flexible Workspaces and Data Glove projects.
  • Numerous projects were carried out in the summer semester 2017. The Smart Living 2051 project continued, a Virtual Museum, a replica of our solar system, and a Data Glove for interaction in the CAVE were developed.
  • During the winter semester 2016/2017, the projects "SmartLiving 2050" and "MR Driving Accumulator" were carried out.
  • In the summer semester of 2016, students from a wide range of disciplines (computer science, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering) participated in the projects "Cave Keeper", "Driving simulator - acoustics" and "Active chassis for a driving simulator".
  • In winter semester 2015/2016 three projects Virtual Twin of a Milling Machine, FoSi Forklift Simulator, Modeling of processes in VR with gesture control were realized.
  • Results SS 2015: Virtual Factory, Entwickling Sensors for 3D mobile Powerwall & Development of an autonomous robot capable of reconstructing interior spaces.
  • Results WS 2014/15: Energy Efficiency game & time machine game with haptic interface.
  • Publication with students "Interactive Visualization of Energy Efficiency Concepts in Virtual Reality", EuroVR 2014 conference in Bremen.
  • Cooperation with IPG Automotive GmbH for joint work on research topics in the context of the virtual reality internship
